The Spokane River Falls in Riverfront Park covered in snow and ice.
But the South Hill. Now there's a mess. My four wheel drive truck nearly got stuck several times -- and many other trucks actually did -- on the side streets. There is about two feet of snow clogging everything. Entire neighborhoods are at a standstill. Some are without power.
And all of this from snow. I've lived in this area for more than 20 years and I've never seen anything like this. This is a winter storm beyond the norm. It is truly impressive.
I
remember, when I was young, the Icestorm that hit Spokane and sent the city reeling into a supposed disaster. Nobody had power. Some people didn't have it for a few weeks. That was in 1996.
The thing with Icestorm, though, was that if you wanted to you could get into your car and drive somewhere. You could go hang out at the mall to warm up, or go to a movie.
This storm is different.
The snow has been falling non-stop for a month. It doesn't matter if it's wet or dry, thick or thin, the snow has been piling up and it's getting pretty bad.
So it was with a sense of adventure that Joe and I got inside Big Yellow and took it out for a bit of a spin around town. Downtown was pretty clear. The snow's been piled up into the middle of the roads, which makes driving more of an adventure.
