Warm winds
It's brown again out there.
W
arm winds blew today. I could tell last night as the snow became heavier. By this afternoon, what was once a world covered in white became a soggy, half-brown purgatory.

The winds buffeted my truck on the endless drive home through eight inches of slush. At home, Mom and I put golden Christmas lights on the living room tree, but outside, the winds shattered Mertz's windmill and knocked down my outdoor lights.

And upstairs, on my bed, the ceaseless sounds of water dripping onto the porch roof by my window kept me awake and reminded me that the winters of my childhood are only going to be stories that I can tell my own children.
